As a retired Lieutenant from FDNY I can tell you that smoke alone should not
have caused the demise of the radar and VHF. Heat and most extinguishing
agents would definitely be a problem and may have caused the electronics to
be damaged. Without seeing the boat it is hard to diagnose how much damage
was from fire, heat or smoke but a year of interior overhaul sounds like
fire or high heat to me. The interior of any Tashiba I have seen does not
have any paint but should be varnished over teak or teak veneer.

 

I suggest you take a close look at the overhead especially where the alleged
diesel heater was positioned. The stove pipe exhaust from the heater should
have exited the boat through a 3" hole in the deck and you would find this
closed up at this point. The overhead panels on our Tashiba are made of a
cream color Formica and bordered in teak strips. Some Baba's had teak lap
strake lining the overhead. If these panels are new than insist on having
one closest to the stove pipe exit pulled down to check the underside of the
deck for repair or heat damage. If anything looks suspicious here I would
look for another boat. In my opinion, cleaning a boat from smoke damage
should not take a year and is not a serious issue. After all, cleaning a
house from a smoky oil burner backdraft does not take more than a few weeks.
Also, was any part of the boat re-wired? What else looks new with the
interior finish? When looking for repaired fire or heat damage, be sure to
look at the fine details in high places, (heat rises).

 

Hope some of these hints help you decide on how much risk this boat
represents. If it's only smoke it may be a great deal. On the other hand,
fire damage can hide many future headaches.

I have a unique question; I hope someone might be able to offer some
insight. I am interested in a Baba 35 which is for sale. The dealer tells me
that two years ago the boat's diesel heater somehow vented into the cabin.
(A relative of the then owner somehow did this) It turned the cabin totally
black, according to the dealer. The radar and vhf had to be thrown away do
to the smoke damage. The current owner removed the diesel heater. The boat
was purchased at a discount and the interior was then cleaned and areas
painted, it took about a year according to the dealer. Now it is up for
sale.

 

When I viewed the boat it was clean inside and out. Is this a reason to stay
away from this boat?
