Is there not an issue with oil separating into acids
and water components while laid up in an engine? It
would seem that running the engine from time to time
would be better for it - that laying it up is the last
resort for truely absentee owners. Good for moving the
impeller and recoating the insides with an oil film.
As for running it without a load, this arguement would
apply to cars and trucks as well. Would you turn your
car engine off when stopped at a traffic light or in
stop-and-go commuter traffic? Running the boat engine
until the oil is warm now and again (and changing the
oil once or twice) might be the lesser of two evils
here.

As for changing the cutlass bearing, I would think to
do it at your convenience and perhaps with other work
on shaft, coupling, or log. You will probably find all
sorts of other projects which need to be done before
re-splashing, so doing the ones you already know about
when you can makes getting back in the water that much
easier. If there is a detrimental effect of having a
new bearing sitting unused it would be very very
small.
