IMNSHO, this is one area of boats that is has more than its share of
snakeoil, hokeum, and just plain nonsense. Unlike fuel, water, or
holding tanks, it's hard to tell what's in the batteries. For many it's
hard to know if anything's going into them and how much is really going
out of them. This stuff isn't *that* hard to understand - be wary of
the ones who say it is. And be doubly wary of those who say it is and
have something to sell...

Simple is good. Clean contacts are good. Thick wire is good - the
longer the wire, the thicker the wire. Avoiding tying plus directly to
minus is good - fusing close to the power source limits the cost of
getting this one wrong. Neatness and organization is good. Preventive
maintenance is good. And simple makes all of the above easier to do.

And, coming back on topic, neither AGM or gel cells are simple.
