The Panda 38 (and 34) were both, indeed, built by Ta Shing (as are/were
some/all Mason, Norseman, Taswell). U.S. entities involved were Bob Berg,
Gary Grant, and a couple of companies, Tatoosh Marine and Quicksilver
Corporation - if I recall correctly. Both the 34 and 38 have replaced the
canoe stern with a 'traditional' transom (inward sloping transom as opposed
to 'sugar scoop'), they may also be a little flatter bottomed than the
Baba's and have a modified full keel (cut away forefoot) - so they handle
like a Ferrari - well, like a Ferrari with 4 flats anyway. The idea (at
least for the 38) was for a lighter weight, slightly smaller boat,
supposedly optimized for a couple. I have a (xerox) copy of the Panda 38
sales brochure that talks about this some and will try to remember to scan
and send a copy to Bruce P and whomever else may be intersted.
Hey Bill, what did a new Tashiba 40 cost in 1985?
