Further inspection shows that the bolt turns freely - so it may be
broken. I need an extra hand to verify whether it is turning inside.

Bobstay fitting, samson post are firmly in place

Because the whisker stays are loose, one possibility is that the bowsprit
woods is getting rotty and the bowsprit has bowed.

This would account for the loose whisker stays. Eyeballing the bowsprit
suggest that this may have happened. Will check it out further today.

But, clearly, the bobstay is as tight as can be - and the headstay is now
pretty loose - so what would be pulling the bobstay so tightly?

Another suggestion I received that perhaps the bobstay had been
overtightened, and this caused the bowsprit to bend - and, that,
counterintuitively, I should loosen the bobstay!

The wood does not seem hard as rock - that is what I get for not varnishing
the bowsprit??

Someone had a new bowsprit built with an windlass platform built in - I
would be interested in details.
