You offered a clue in your last comment. Look for a shortened bowsprit. This
could be caused by the butt end rotting (termites?) and/or dislodgement of
the Samson post-highly unlikely. A slight shift aft of the bowsprit could
also cause the shearing of that pesky bolt. In this situation, the bobstay
could still remain tight because the end of the bowsprit lifts enough to
maintain tension but the whisker stays loosen. This is just a long distance
diagnosis, however. Curious. The job of removing the bowsprit is not too
formidable and offers the added advantage of sealing all the cracks and
getting a good finish on it (or replacing if necessary).
