Your timing for concern with this shallow 1 1/2" high collar in center of the SS deck-mounted mast step is very timely as Iam stepping my mast next week.

 In the midst of considering the wiring runs I have thought about epoxing or bedding with Dow, a four inch riser collar( out of conduit or other PVC diameter) to slip over this shallow extrusion,which the wooden mast step, with it's fairly large wire alley exit can accept.
To slip a collar inside will not provide enough room for the new larger AGW cable of which there are four.
 The VHF,radar and SSB and deck working lites were previously wired out the side of the mast and through the coachtop.I will check to see how many cables can fit through this small opening.
The radar/and sky-coms are being relocated to a SS mast aft.

As the spruce mast suffered from rot at the step, I have applied 3 coats of epoxy as a barrier on the rebuilt mast step.

I view the corner limber holes in the SS step to be ineffective, will try to enlarge and polish.

A Question....
Should the mast step be lined with any medium like rubber or bedding compound or should it just go right against the SS plate?

Water incursion and drainage are a concern. It appears to have been bedded before, however the aging failure of this compound probably contributed to the resulting rot, now rescarfed with beautiful spruce from Forks Wa and barrier coated.
I will measure today for the collar application, my logic should work in theory, but I will check the Baba web for wisdom from other gurus.
