Thanks for the advise. When we replaced the hose, I took a chunk of the old
PVC hose, some bronze, some stainless steel, and all the old gaskets from
our rebuild of the head - to emulate all the materials that fluid would come
in contact with in our head - and soaked them in muriatic acid for three
weeks. I could find no measuable difference in the materials other than all
the CaCO3 was gone. So now we do put a slug of acid down, about once a week.
I will go the extra distance to not have to remove those hoses again...
