In all fairness to Raritan, the part about where the loop goes is in the
manual. Doesn't do much good, though, if the installer (me) doesn't

Ah, but the problem isn't negative pressure, per se, but *why* there is
a vacuum in the line. A nice little motion sensor on the pump (it's not
enough to simply detect in/not in "home" position, as a number of things
could unship the handle from the home position) toggling a solenoid on
the vent loop (or asking Dr. Schmidt and his vent-stopping finger to
stop by whenever pumping the head... [wink]) would be a good fix for
allowing an intentional vacuum and defeating an unintentional (that is,
siphon-induced) vacuum. Or one could RTFM and put the vented loop where
is should be.

I think you've nailed the cause. Backflow like this shouldn't happen,

We use a LectraSan on OWTW and cycle it at least twice with fresh
(non-Bay) water before closing the boat. The only problem, albeit a
brief one, is the first flush the following weekend is rather ...ah...
ripe, as the water and other stuff in the inlet hose turns anaerobic
during the week. Whew!
