I get my 240 lb 6 foot self down there and pull the bilge pump hoses out and
use a grabber and shop vacc. Ain't fun!

little flower in my hair" and I will bring my magnet.

I just recently installed non skid strips 2"x 12", the self adhesive gritty
rough ones and can now more easily have a foot hold as I step down and up
the "slippery slope". The access on my boat is via the port cockpit locker.
The Battery banks are on stbd.

Ahhh... the lost tool pick-up game.

  I use an very powerful magnet tied on a slender 4' length of wood trim. I
drill a hole to accept line or wire to keep a short leash on the magnet as
it "walks" along the bottom of the bilge.

I do not keep this magnet on the boat, as it gives the compass the fits. I
have considered fibre-glasing shallow battens at the edge of the shaft
alley, to stop the suicidal slide of useful items to the bilge god.

 I have a question about the condition of retrieved (usually hardened steel
tool metal) objects that appear to have brown-yellowish film and pitted
chemical etching, even after a short time in the bilge. I have concern that
there might be stray electrical charges causing this effect. Iam considering
dropping a zinc,again tied on a wooden leash, in the area to monitor any
possible galvanic activity.

 My boat is bonded.
