The reason I asked if your engine was Volvo was of an unique (I think)
feature of its transmission -- older engines. The thrust from the propeller
forces two cones together engaging the transmission (in forward). If the
shaft is prevented from moving forward, solidly bonding the cones together,
slippage will occur. Here may be a problem with the cones, too. I had the
extreme example motoring up Puget Sound to Port Townsend from Seattle one
fine March day when the prop fully disengaged. I was expecting to have a
transmission rebuilt. Upon hauling the boat, we found a small cedar knot
lodged between the propeller blade and the hull, locking the prop,
preventing it moving forward. Knocking out the wood chip was the total cost
of my transmission repair.

I had a strange experience when I was motoring on Lake Washington last
weekend. Situation; no wind, engine about half power and I pushed
forward the throttle. Boat started accelerating at first, then the
feeling of total loss of power(boat slowing) with the sound of an
increase of engine rpm at the same time. If I was in a car, I would say
the clutch is slipping. I backed off the power and went back into my
slip without further incident. What could have been slipping? I have
noticed the F-N-R lever is sluggish and it is sometimes difficult
finding neutral.

Any ideas?
