Hi Don,
Could be your gear shifter, but I would also check your fuel supply to the
engine. When did you last change your fuel filters? Those symptoms also
occur when a diesel is starved for fuel. When did you last have your fuel
"polished" (i.e., filtered to remove all the crud that builds up in diesel
fuel inside the tank). Also check for residual water in the fuel.
This also happens when you start to suck air into your fuel lines going into
the diesel.
If it isn't in the gear shifter or your fuel filtration lines, then check
your fuel injectors.
