That's the beauty of this project - not much to photograph. For OWTW,
it'll be a VHF whip on the stern rail, a cable to the receiver sitting
next to the nav station, the serial/USB box next to that, and wires
running off to the GPS, a/p, and laptop. Easy peasy! What will help,
though, is an article about the how and why for my computer system in
general.
For example, I included the option to let my cockpit GPS (Garmin 76 in a
cradle with a power/data cable) take over if the unit in the nav station
goes away. Also, the data stream from the laptop also talk to my
(ailing) radar (for waypoint position on the display, ETA, etc). I've
started to talk to Rose Point about their radar product, which would
integrate a Koden(?) radar with Coastal Explorer. That creates the
situation where there is are two single failure points that would bring
OWTW back to the age of sail: the laptop and overall electrical supply.
For the former, when updating Chris' laptop, I picked a unit that is
interchangeable with the one we use now. For the latter, I'm looking
into wind gensets (long term) and have two solar panels (rated for
maintenance, not charging) currently used to keep the batteries topped
up during the winter, while off shore power. We'll see how that
develops over time. [grin]
