Just remembered that there was a little more to the mast collar story which
occured along with the mast step replacement - itīs kind of a repressed
memory for us. (Epoxying stainless steel to stop a leak is even a little too
wierd for us.) The collar extends down only about halfway through the cabin
top - the lower half is wood trim against the sandwich of fiberglass and
core. That is what got epoxied, which of course led us upstream to the leak
allowing water in in the first place. That leak was from the fife rail base.
Upshot was no matter how you stopped up the mast, it was going to leak, and
if you did manage to stop it up, the leak would spread throughout the cabin
top and find another place to drip on you... and do a little damage on the
way.
An unexpected benefit for us from the unstopped mast collar is better
ventilation, hot air - which we seem to have a lot of down here (no jibes,
please) can escape more easily. Donīt know where the cool air will come from
to replace it...
