I don't recall on our 30 what I did with the shaft log extension into the
hull to mount the PSS shaft seal but on our 40 I had to rebuild the
extension. It was inadequate in size and also broken allowing water to leak
in. It was most confusing. I had this incipient water leak at the existing
dripless shaft seal but could not shut it off. I finally discovered it
between the rubber hose and the hull. Tightening clamps and replacing them
did no good as I thought the leak was from beneath the hose. After I removed
it and examined the tube extension did I find the crack. I built it up with
several wraps of epoxy impregnated fiberglass, I used the final outside
dimensions of the tube and ordered the PYI to fit. They did.

Now dry as a bone. I put my first dripless seal on over 20 years ago and
never went back. (Bill, you can make fun of this sentence if you like,
but...) In the days before, I had a baggie filled with cut segments of shaft
seals to fit and ready for an emergency--which did occur. One, a long story
for happy hour. I can personally report that water coming by that shaft
without seals is like a minor fire hose, or seems so when scrunched up in
those confines in the bilges a thousand miles from nearest land with the
ocean's bottom six miles below.
