I have had two alpines Tuner/CD units in 16 years and swear by their quality
. . . I bought high-end 5" $200 speakers for the interior and they are still
marvelous 16 years later . . . My cockpit speakers were alpine and blew
after 6 years and I installed another pair with metal grates that I was
never happy with . . . On several boats that I work on I have just installed
several pairs of kenwood 6.5" speakers . . .with rave reviews . . .
Wandering Star will be getting a pair this spring . . . when money permits I
will buy a Alpine that can be used with an ipod . . . mine can't, I would
install a subwoofer . . .and add a remote control in the cockpit . . . Paul

Stereo installation - my thoughts.

There are a lot of substandard "bargain" CD and DVD auto players out there.
I have tried to install 3 in the last couple of years.

The first one was a Pyle - if the unit was hot, which was all the
time, the CD could not be ejected - and, believe it or not, there was
a warning in the manual about this - so that got junked.

Then I had another PYLE DVD player - with so called MP3 capability -
when the player in my car conked out, I pulled the boat player and
put it in the car - but, it had a habit of not turning off and
running down the battery and finally in went bad and I junked it.

Now I have a JVCDVD reciever on the boat - but, the auxiliary in has
to go throught a proprietary plug. The unit works okay when playing
a DVD/CD - but, will not recognize input into the aux input - from my
ipod or other source - so this will have to be removed.

So, back to basics: get a unit with a standard aux RCA input. All
the MP3 and IPOD input stuff sounds great, but will it work? Maybe,
but I would rather control the IPOD through the IPOD anyway.

Next thing: get an infrared remote extender (PIE) so that you can
control the sound anywhere in the boat - or even from the cockpit.

Finally, pay a couple of bucks extra, and do not get too much power
or your batteries will be drained.

Alan
