Hi Cindy,
We have a Tayana 37
I installed a SONY AM/FM/CD player in the panel at the Nav Station. The unit
came with a useful wireless remote controller that allows me to regulate
volume, change stations, etc., from the cockpit. The downside of the SONY
was that it wasn't MP3 compatible, and the Auxiliary input required an
add-on expensive adapter. I would definitely look for one that has an
auxiliary input jack on the front panel to plug in iPod, XM or Sirius
satellite receiver, etc.
I mounted one pair of speakers on the forward bulkhead adjoining the main
cabin, and a second pair of speakers in the cockpit. I cut out holes in the
coaming as far aft as possible, and mounted them there in order to minimize
sound intrusion if people are sleeping down below.
For the cockpit speakers, I bought a pair of Sony outdoor "marine"
speakers". I was disappointed in the quality of untinned wiring, and the
central cones started breaking down after a few years. I used a pair of
Indoor/Outdoor speakers for the cabin. They are "OK", but not great. Not
sure if the Bose speakers would hold up very well in a marine environment.
But I don't think that the so-called "Marinized" units from West Marine are
any better.
Much may depend upon your musical preferences. I don't play them at a high
volume, and mostly listen to classical/folk/Willie Nelson type of music, so
I didn't add a big woofer.
regards,
Harvey
