Hi Paul,

The twizzle rig, as I understand it, comprises of two identical headsails,
usually quite high cut large jibs. Both are fixed to the forward stay, in
most casing on twin track furlers. Each sail is poled out, one to port and
the other to starboard. The trick is in the arrangement of the inboard pole
ends, instead of the poles being attached to the mast, they are attached to
each other using a bridle, and this bridle is attached to the boat with an
uphaul and downhaul. The poles are then able to move left and right but not
up or down. This is supposed to allow the sails to roll leaving the boat
vertical. I can see the theory, and people do testify to its effectiveness.
A big advantage in squally downwind conditions is that the sails can be
furled up together just by pulling in the furling line and letting both
poles follow the clew forward.
I hope my explanation makes some sense. I plan to have two identical sails
cut out of lightweight cloth for my next trip.
