My fuel tank is in the bilge. I replaced my original fuel tank inspection
plate and had it fitted with a larger screw-on fill cap. I can now bring the
hose down into the saloon and fill from there. The deck fill fitting is too
small to take the big pump nozzles everyone seems to be using these days.
The old inspection plate had a small cap just big enough to fit my wooden
dowel rod fuel gauge. Now, no diesel splash-back on side deck. And when it's
raining I can still fill without worrying (too much) about rain water
getting in to the tank.

The biggest problem I found to replacing both hoses is access. The vent hose
is particularly difficult to get to at both ends-and the middle. Use hose
Coast Guard approved for fuel. I can't remember the designation at the
moment. Fuel smell is not too much of a problem since there is little
opportunity for fuel to soak the hoses. I have resorted to replacing only
portions (damaged) of the hose-the tank end primarily-because of the
difficulty in getting to the deck end. Also, I found the hoses near the
filler end in good shape.
