If you've never opened up your winches for inspection or cleaning, you
should do it! I've been in the process of servicing Mandisa's winches
and can tell you than twenty years of neglect is not only ugly, it's
also potentially dangerous. dirt, salt, dried up grease, stuck palls,
sticky bearings - I don't know why any one of them didn't go free
wheeling on us at the worst moment. It's a dirty job, but it's not as
complicated as the exploded diagram from Lewmar would make it seem.

Seven down, one to go. (The Alerion 28 in the next slip only has three!)
