While I remove my batteries out of habit I installed a Siemens panel over 6
years ago
and hardly ever have to revert to my alternator. An inexpensive portable
panel should
be fine for you. The Sunsei panels from West Marine I understand are quite
good. I
would not worry too much about direction, all they really require is strong
light. Mine
is fixed to the companion way hatch cover facing straigh up and it gets
pleanty of sun.

OWTW will be on the hard this winter and leaving her plugged in (to keep the
batteries up) is not an option. As a "Plan B", I'm thinking about using a
solar panel as trickle charger. The idea would be to get the panel facing
south as much as possible and tilted somewhat to favor winter's low sun
elevation. I do *not* want to get started on a permanent panel, just
something to offset both internal discharge and the occasional bilge pump
activation (rain down the mast). Suggestions?
