Actually, this is a fairly common question from would-be owners. Two
areas come to mind: 1) the iron fuel tank, and 2) the chain plates. The
problem with the tank is, being so-called black iron, if water
accumulates in the bottom of the tank or stands around the outside of
the tank, soon or later rust can do a number on the tank. The 30 and 40
have good access to their tanks (for replacement) while the 35... not so
good. Basically, plan on cutting the old one up in place and replacing
the single tank with two tanks. The chainplates, on some boats but not
all, have experienced crevice corrosion (water gets into the stainless
steel and blocks air from keeping the stainless from rusting - one
reason not to use stainless in some applications). The chainplates for
the mast's standing rigging are fairly easy to get to below decks. The
whisker stays (keep the bow sprit in place laterally) and bob stay
(counters tension from the fore stay) chainplates, however, are often
covered by joinery below decks. Beyond that, the problems are really
just generic to most boats and not unique to the Baba and Tashiba
lines. Ta Shing, the builder, is an excellent builder and not at all a
"leaky teaky" builder.
