FWIW, One With The Wind has a single volume ice box (top opening) and a
Grunert AR-50 cold plate system (12VDC compressor motor - the controller
lets it run only if there's 110VAC in the boat or oil pressure in the
engine - either the charger should be working or the alternator should
be recharging the batteries). It works, stuff in the box stays cold,
and we can make ice, even though this isn't a freezer unit. Frozen
stuff brought on board and put at the bottom of the box stays frozen
until we thaw it. In the 10+ years we've had the unit, it's eaten a
thermostat (chafed a hole in the vacuum line for the sensor), eaten a
relay for the controller (possible salt water intrusion - the relay was,
literally, plug and play to replace), and now seems about to want to
nosh on the original v-belt. The original Freon (R-12!!!) is still in
place and still dry. Under way, we run the unit when motoring or once
or twice a day when on the hook. Tied to shore power, we let the unit
run whenever it wants. I'd buy it again in a New York minute.
Cheers,
Rick Emerson
