Hello Cherie- Regardless of what kind of large bilge
pump you use(I have a Rule 3700), it is a good idea to
have a small one as well. I have a Rule 500 mounted
at the bottom of the bilge that will trip first. That
way it is the one that cycles, it keeps the bilge
dryer because of the smaller hose size(less backwash),
and has a check valve to keep backwash to a minimum.
If the water happens to come to the next level(about
1.5" higher), then the 3700 will trip and do some real
pumping. I have even gone so far as to put counters
on each one so I know how many times each has gone
off. The 500 obviously will wear out sooner, and is
much cheaper to replace. The 3700 never goes off, so
I have to remember to test it occasionally, usually
when filling the water tanks. I have UltraPump
switches, and recommend them highly. The counters
sometimes will register 2x during a pump cycle,
counting the on and off phase, but relatively it helps
in knowing what the pumps are doing. The advice of
having plugs and other damage control gear is well
given.
