This doesn't quite answer your question on dual instrument panels, which is
common on larger powerboats, but the following is an option for emergency
engine shutdown. On one boat, I attached a flag halyard cord to the engine
shutdown solenoid with the other end leading to a convenient spot INSIDE the
boat with a substantial toggle handle at the end (find in the dark kind).
With this, I could do an emergency shutdown from inside the cabin and
needn't try from the cockpit. It worked excellent. No electricity needed-or
extra circuits. As for antitheft, just have something hold the cord taught
keeping the fuel-control cutoff open preventing engine start (who would
figure-except those now reading this). This installation answered the KISS
theory and always worked. The cord could be routed via small pulleys, but I
found just leading around installed engine hardware sufficient. This is the
next project for the present MOONSHADOW. And it worked on at least two
occasions in mid ocean when the prop caught drifting net and no one was in
the cockpit. A dive for the toggle was far more responsive than clambering
up the ladder and out into the cockpit and finding the switch.
 
A good marine electrician with experience on large motor yachts could devise
a circuitry for you.

Has any put in two switches, two starter buttons, and two kill buttons for
one engine? Or a remote start, like cars have?
 
It seems two switches would be a problem, since you'd have to go to the
location where you started the engine to turn off the switch.
 
I already have two engine instrument panels, though I totally dislike where
the exterior one is located. I'd like to move it one day. One time my
cockpit drains got plugged and all the water drained through the panel (it's
located below the line of the seats next to the companionway). Many of my
galley drawers got wet.
 
 
I have a pilot house, so this is what I am thinking about doing:
 
1. Locate a key switch (probably at the nav station near the electrical
panel or hidden behind a door) to turn on/off the power to an engine relay.
 
2. Locate two momentary contract push buttons with LED's to tell me when the
engine relay has been engaged (at both helms).
 
3. Locate two starter momentary contact buttons to engine the starter (at
both helms).
 
4. Locate two kill momentary contact buttons to kill the engine (at both
helms).
 
 
The sequence I envision is:
 
A. Whenever we're on the boat, the key switch would be on. When we left, it
would be turned off and the key removed. It would help prevent theft.
 
B. To start the engine: Push an engine relay button to turn on power to the
engine. LED's at both helms would be on. Push a start button.
 
C. To kill the engine: Push a kill button. Push an engine relay button to
turn off power to the engine (when the alarm started sounding). Both LED's
would go off.
 
Does this make sense? Has anyone seen such an arrangement? I've Googled the
hell out of this and can find no help.
