Yes Varnish --
A top varnish pro in Annapolis (Epifanes only) does this with varnish.

One coat of 90% sealer and 10% varnish.
Let it seep in and dry.
The a coat of 80 and 20.
Then 60-40
Then 30-70

Now it is ready to varnish.
But, the idea I guess is to fill the pores first.
