Hmmm...by my calculations, this original message was substantially less than
500k. With pics, was around 400k.

Ahhh... a topic near and dear to me.

I fretted over oil vs. varnish at the beginning of the season. I needed
something that could be overcoated quickly as I had a very short window to
apply the stuff.

I mixed teak oil (might have been sea fin) with about 10% Schooner Varnish
thinking this would give a more finished look.

Wrong.

After a week with 3 coats, it barely looked like I had applied anything. The
weather actually cooperated and I determined that varnish was what I
wanted...especially thanks to Cindy's comment "...she wants to be pretty."

I put 2 coats of Schooner Varnish over the other stuff and the color was
amazing! The summer has been very hot and sunny and 2 coats wasn't cutting
it on the caprail (vertical surfaces are fine). I've been re-coating when I
get the chance with some 400 grit sand before coating and the stuff looks
truly awesome. When we relaunch next season, I'll fine sand again and lay on
as many coats as I can. I'm really convinced that varnish is the way to go
and REAL varnish (like Schooner) is giving me the look I wanted. After one
extra coat (now 3 coats), it is holding up well. Three coats is less than
recommended, but I just didn't have the time for more so I'm applying when I
can. I imagine for you Ken, since I believe your boat is in a barn, take
your time and apply up to 8 coats.

I think applying the oil first really made a difference for the appearance.
It's a much deeper color than I had with previous varnish.
