You can get a nice compromise by playing with JPEG compression (usually
termed 'quality'). If you increase the compression (lower the quality),
you can reduce the size significantly. For anything but minute details (do
you *really* need to see those bolt threads?), a setting of 50% - 60% works
great and can significantly reduce file size while maintaining an 800 x
600 image.

In addition, if you have photoshop (or another image editing program), you
can reduce file size by adjusting brightness/contrast as well as setting
the white point. Photoshop can do these automatically by using 'Auto Levels'.
JPEG compression makes use of white space and if your image has a cast to
it, that means the white space is off-white. This will effect compression.
Auto Levels takes care of this cast and optimizes brightness/contrast.
