I'm in the process of re-doing mine right now. I got some tips off the
Bristol finish website. Here's a link to the site and they show a scarf
joint right on the main page.

I took a dremmil and cleaned out all the varnish and other material that
was in the joint leaving a nice clean joint. I then sanded down to bare
wood about an inch on each side of the joint, taped it off cleanly with
blue tape and filled it with black 5200. I used a razor blade and
scraped the excess off then peeled the tape immediately. I now have
about 6 coats of Bristol on just the joint and am in the process of
sanding it down to even it out with the rest of the rail.

I experimented on just one joint but it looks great and I have now
started on the others. I have before and after photos I can post if
you would like to see them.

By the way, this is the first time I'm using Bristol Finish and I really
like it.

We're redoing our britework on our Baba 30 and have been watching the
cap
rail scarf joint beginning to part ever so slightly. Several folks have
suggested stripping down to bare wood in the immediate vicinity of the
joint
and adding epoxy to fill in and seal the joint.

Is this the best way to repair the joint before refinishing? Will it
leave a
joint discoloration when finished?

Any experiences in addressing this issue are welcome.
