What is the construction of the rudder, I understand its foam filled but what do the straps connect to, is there a steel frame within the rudder.
Has anyone had a rudder failure ?
Has anyone lost part of the rudder?
I intend to investigate this problem on haul this winter but without knowing the internal construction of the rudder Im concerned that I may have a failure before this.

The design of the Baba 30 rudder on my 1980 sounds similar to your Lydia. Had the rudder scraped of the Interlux 2000 (applied 1983 by PO) Could see saturation in the back lighted foam core construction. Let rudder dry out (along with the rest of the Boat hull for new barriar coat of Epoxy Three), drilled holes above the weaken areas and injected epoxy to strengthen. I considered the alternative is to have new rudder fabricated of stainless or wood. However since the leaks on Lydia B, are about the straps, this would suggest a structual weakness as well. These old ladies can be be fixed.

Lydia b on slip for antifouling at weekend, after steam clean of hull noticed water leaking from rudder straps, it looks like rudder is water logged.
Anyone had this problem and whats the job to put it right, Lydia now back in the water but Im a bit concerned about this, I intend to haul out this winter BUT will rudder be ok until then.
