If you have plate zincs on the rudder, two bolts go through the rudder to
hold them on. You (or previous owners) can or could have replaced them with
anything that would fit through the holes in the plate and be long enough.
The bolts on the plate at the rudder shoe can also be replaced, but it is a
little more difficult so most are probably original. My imperfect
recollection is they are SAE, but some fittings on these boats (like on the
thru-hulls) have unusual pitches for their size (like 1/2" by 12 turns per
inch instead of 13 TPI). Soooo - best advise is not to drop that sucker, but
if you do, put the remaining nut on the forward bolt to reduce drag.
Tool stores and most auto shops sell guage sets to measure pitch, and they
are handy to have around for situations like this. The sets are like feeler
guages with teeth - a bunch of serrated strips of metel with different
spaced teeth all on a pin so they can swivel - in either metric or SAE - and
you fit the guages in the bolt until you find one that fits snugly. Ours
came with our tap and die sets, but they couldn't cost more than $4 to $5 by
themselves. Or if you have the nut and can take it to a hardware store, just
try turning it on to various sized bolts to find what it fits. If it's a
good hardware store, they will whip out their own guages to measure it...
