I believe Rick's continuity test is the best way to eliminate the wire
as the fault in the system with out cost or hassle, however, keep in
mind it is possible to have a chaffed wire jacket that only shorts out
when the boat moves a certain way. Another words, the faulty wire may be
an intermittent issue and test fine while you are up the mast with the
paper clip and than frustrate you when you come down to the instruments
and find there is still a problem. Wire is basically cheap, (compared to
a new transducer) and if your instrument wire is a few years old the
only true solution is to replace it. If you are going up the mast anyway
you can have someone pull the old wire at the base of the mast while you
feed the new one spliced to the end of the old.

I'm dealing with a similar problem with my wind instrument. My problem
could be the transducer at the top of the mast or it could be a chaffed
wire in the mast. the least expensive fix would be to replace the wire
first. If the problem persists than I will get the new wind transducer.
