Stay Set X is from New England Ropes. Brian Toss recommended 7/16 at the largest.

  We replaced our halyards a couple of years ago with StaySetX - I thought they were from Yale Cordage, but not sure. Used 9/16", it's a little easier to handle if your shives can take it. Terminated with Wichard clasps but if I had it to do over again I would use the reinforced shackle with a captured pin (pin looks to be about 1/2" or so). We hired someone to do the splices since our splicing frighten small children - and dogs.
  If you are bound to check for dry rot, check the stem, thru the cabin roof and into the bottom of the chain locker. Most common place for rot.
  Once upon a time we had a 1906 vintage house in Alameda with a large wooden front door. There was eighty years of paint on that door but we were determined to strip it back to wood. The gels and paint removers just pushed the paint around and didn't remove it from the grain. It turned out that a heat gun and a scraper were the easiest approach. We used them to remove about twenty years of varnish on our boat as well. And our door was of beautiful cross-cut oak when we finally got to the wood.
  Never seen wire fender cages on a sailboat and I suspect that is because they would present a fair amount of resistance to water flow when you are heeled over - same with kayaks, windsurfing boards, and all sorts of other stuff you COULD tie to the sides... And it's not that you never expect to be heeled over so far - in choppy water waves will pile themselves up on your deck no matter what.
