I have followed this discussion and similar discussions in boatyards and
timberframe shops everywhere. One comment from a yard fellow in Port
Angeles was that "the reason we are all talking about it is because nothing
really works".

I have also tried Detco Crystal with great results. Epifanes has been good
and so has Schooner and even Behr. Bristol was good, too, but I found it
was not worth the money and it was too brittle. I am using Epifanes now. I
have not tried their finish that does not require sanding between coats yet.

On the subject of oil. I use it a lot on timbers and some then spend their
life outdoors. There are so many penetrating oils to try out there it is
mind boggling. Since I am finishing in my shop these days I have used some
Bioshield oils that have no VOC's. They are holding up OK. Among the 20 or
so finishes I have used was Daly's SeaFin Teak Oil. I heard that the Wooden
Boat School in Port Townsend mixes their SeaFin with some pine tar to make
their much touted "Boat Sauce". Anyone ever try that one?

I seem to like the varnish look best but I also like the weathered teak
look. Jeff on a T-37 called Driftwood said "Green and Gray all the way"
(green bronze and gray teak). Driftwood was beautiful.
