Bruce,

The offset pedestal guard I used to replace the old 54" straight guard was
purchased at West Marine, an Edson product, and is 1"x9.5". The diameter
specified is the outside diameter of the stainless tube used.

Thinking about your dilemma, I now recall that I had the same problem. I
could not find a 1" straight pedestal guard over 54", that is why I
eventually chose to go to an offset guard. I think there is a strength
issue with the longer straight pedestals of 1" diameter, they are more
likely to bend under load than those with bends (especially when you gab
onto the top in inclement weather as you are being tossed around).

I struggled for some time with this and I finally came up with four
potential solutions which I considered to lead me to my solution:

1) Use a four or six inch (or longer) extension on the bottom of the
existing pedestal guard. The 1" stainless tube extension could be welded
onto the bottom of the old pedestal, or use a joiner section. Strength
remains an issue with this approach and in my case it would have been too
tall to accommodate what I wanted to add.

2) Use a pedestal with a larger diameter tube. That would have made running
the wires inside much easier. The issue with going to a larger diameter are
the holes in the guard plate just below the compass and the pedestal feet,
these would need to be replaced. As you start to replace things, on boats
the age of ours, you start running into the "avalanche effect". That is,
one is never sure if the new replacement item will really fit with what is
already there and once you get started further required changes just keep
multiplying.

3) Use an angle guard (one bend), it is likely to have less interference
with the table and drink holder. I did not choose this option because it
would not accommodate both Navpods I wanted to add.

4) Use an offset pedestal guard. I chose this approach, despite its other
shortcomings, because it was able to accommodate the Navpods I wanted to
add.

On Jubel the new offset pedestal (1"x9.5") slipped right through the guard
plate and into the feet, nothing in that area needed modification.
