Good One Bruce. you are absolutely correct and the consequences could be
quite ugly once the breaker was thrown.

I ran into and interesting situation the other day on a boat built in China
that has 240VAC 50 amp service. The Chinese wired the boat for single phase
240VAC hot lead and neutral return leg with only the hot lead fused.
Apparently they have no appreciation for how we (American, Mexico, and
others) make up 240 VAC from two phases of 120 VAC, consequently with the
breakers off on the boat there was still 120 VAC on the neutral lead and I
find this quite dangerous. I told the owner he had tow choices (1) re-wire
with double circuit breakers, this would kill all 240 VAC to a circuit or
(2) install an isolation transformer, then neutral is grounded on the
secondary and the single circuit breaker wiring on the hot lead would be
safe.

#2 won't work, they will be out of phase unless you buy a special adapter
for that purpase, about $400 last I knew

I am thinking about relocating my shorepower outlet to shorten the leads and
get it out of the cockpit in a panel redo. Here is what I'm thinking:

 

Scenario A:

 

1. Split the hookup into two: 1 30 amp main panel and 1 30 amp secondary
panel for AC. This way I could hook up to two 30 amp circuits, when
available.

 

2. When 2 30 amp circuits aren't available, I'd switch over the secondary AC
panel to the main 30 amp panel. Or simply use a Y to split the 30 amps to
the two panels. How does connecting one 30 amp circuit to two different 30
amp breakers work?

 

 

Scenario B:

 

1. 1 50 amp main for both circuits and AC. I'd hook up a 50 amp cable to
this when available. Have only one panel.

 

2. When 50 amp isn't available, hook up a 30 amp cable with an adapter. How
does providing 30 amps to a 50 amp breaker work?

 

 

Right now I'm not maxed out at 30 amps, but am close when I run a lot of 110
equipment. I might add another AC unit in the bow cabins, but am not sure. I
might also add a genset (diesel generator) to power 110 (and AC) when not
docked. It would supply 30 to 50 amps, depending upon the size of the unit
and my needs.
