I think I have the hang of hull speed, but as Ian says there's a lot more to
how many miles you can make in a day than the theoretical hull speed. In the
last year I have used 5 knots in my passage plans and that has seemed to
work out quite well. In retrospect I think I did ask a stupid question as
there are so many variables that can't be pinned down. My main concern is
what's the worst case time for crossing the Atlantic E to W, the ARC starts
in the Canaries on Nov 26, and is expected to end in St Lucia 3-4 Weeks
later (most boats are 40 foot or more), I originally planned to have my kids
fly out to meet me for Christmas there, but now I worry that I might not
arrive in time. So I have decided to scrap that idea, anyway I think the
pressure of a deadline is a bad thing in sailing plans. I will just weigh
anchor in the canaries and arrive when I arrive. I will get back to you all
in a years time with some real facts.
On a different note, I am in the middle of upgrading from 2 switched 100AH
batteries to a 440AH battery bank, I have replaced the mains charger and
alternator regulator to modern 4 stage chargers along with 250W of Solar
panels and regulators. Besides costing a fortune this has required lots of
work in the battery box, if anyone wants pictures or details, please let me
know.
