"I am impressed with the durability of the lighthouse generators, but a
little back-of-the-envelope arithmatic reveals that over the 18,000 =
hours
each engine ran, for a month at a time (about 720 hours), each engine =
was
only started and stopped twenty four times before overhaul..."

Good point! I think I have to correct myself-as I recall a little =
better,
the total hours between overhauls was 20,000. But that adds only a =
couple
more engine starts. It is the start-cycling plus varying loads and rpms
(starting and shutting down-frequently without sufficient warm-up time- =
that
takes it toll on our boats' engines). I would guess these lighthouse =
engines
had three to four times the start cycles than calculated here due to =
testing
during our routine inspection visits. I do not know how many times the
engines were overhauled, but they had a remarkable usage record. They =
were,
however, run under ideal conditions with a near constant load at a
continuous 1800 rpm. I remember once we had the unusual situation of =
having
to pull one engine at 14,000 hours due to excessive ring blow-by.
