Yes, Rick is correct I have also been using Coastal Explorer for a full
season and have found it the best for my use out of all the software I have
experience with. I hate to admit it, but I started with VNS in its early
days and stayed with it until a VNS known bug in the software tried to take
me over the top of Cape Ann in Massachusetts. At that point, I switched over
to "The Capn" and used it for several years until they started falling
behind with development. I was not impressed with their latest version so
went looking for charting software again but this time I wanted a package
designed to use ENC charts. I gave NavPac Pro a shot and after two months
decided the software was written for a geek and not a voyaging sailor. Than,
someone on The Baba List posted a comment introducing me to Coastal
Explorer. I wish I still had the email post so I could give them the credit
they deserve, however it was lost in a fatal HD crash. I really like CE
because it is so... easy to use. When I'm tired and wet I can still navigate
the screen with this program. CE includes AIS function and will utilize the
data from an AIS receiver. So far, I'm very happy with my decision to buy
CE.

Uh, how long? This is their first full season AFAIK and I used it for
much of the season. Rich Cassano introduced me to CE and I think a
couple of other folks here use it, too.

Cap'n was basically a database tool (started with FoxPro, way back when)
and the architecture is showing serious signs of aging. VNS is newer
but has too much chrome on it and is priced accordingly. And there's
that issue of the ENC charts... Rose Point also offers value-added
charts, which is fine, but for folks who want free charts and a program
with some sophistication, it's about as good a product as I've met.
