I might not be using the correct terminology here; but there was a crack in
the surface that surrounds the output shaft of the transmission and the shop
informed me that the transmission had to be disassembled to make this
repair. I was not willing to pay for the transmission rebuild as it is
expensive, so I decided to replace it when I located MER in Seatlle as it
only cost a couple $100 more for a new one.

I trust this answers your question. My point in bringing this up is to point
out that rebuilding the transmission is not cheap. The other is that MEAR is
a great company with prompt service and they offer a core rebate on your old
transmission should you purchase a new one.

I have the Universal M50B or 5444 model on a Baba 40 and it has been a
great
engine to date. The 2 bladed prop was swapped on for a 3 blade bt the PO
and
then I upgraded to a Maxi prop. During my last overhaul I noted a rusty
bracket that secures the clutch cable the Hurth transmission and decided
it
was time to pull the transmission to determine the cause of this excess
rust
on the cable bracket. At first glance it looked fine and we were making
plans to mfg a new bracket when I decided I had nothing to lose by
consulting a local transmission expert. That is when we found the
fracture
on the output shaft seal retaining ring. I contacted MER in Seattle and
they
replaced the transmission gave me a core credit for the old one in
return.
