While winterizing One With The Wind (who'll be in the water this
winter), I shut off the inlet for the heat exhanger for the reefer.
Well... tried to, anyway. I got the valve something like 97% closed
and the shaft separated from the ball. So the choice becomes: "seal the
thing to death and haul in the spring, as was planned" or "do a quick
out and in now". I put a short (2" max) piece of reinforced water hose,
filled with 3M 5200, over the barb, clamped that to death, stuffed in a
barb with screw-on cap into the top of the hose, and clamped everything
in sight.
There will be freezes in the winter but we'll have an "ice eater"
churning water near the stern so there should always be open (read
"non-freezing") water near the through-hull, which is 12-18" below the
waterline.
