<SNIP> What is the difference between a "Forum" and a "Listserv"? <END>
A forum is web-based and a listserv is e-mail based.
SAILjazz has the best of both worlds: web-based archives and e-mail
broadcasts.
Running a listserv is no big deal. I run two active listservs for my
daughters, using Arrow: http://www.jadebox.com/arrow/index.php The bigger
problem is the big guys (read AOL, MSN, Hotmail, etc.) desire to cut back on
spam. I applaud these efforts, but we little guys can get blacklisted in the
fray. That's what happened to Baba-L. In addition, some ISP's are limiting
the number of e-mails allowed per hour through their systems to cut back on
costs. It's hard to have it both ways: unlimited e-mails tend to get you
labeled as a spammer. That's why Sam & Cheryl have spent countless hours to
make sure their boards are not viewed as spam, though they occasionally have
their own problems. So...I use a fairly open ISP with few limitations
(www.hostexcellence.com), but I occasionally run into blacklist problems
(others who use their service). That's the compromise I have accepted...so
far.
My advice is for us to sit tight a while, not panic, and see how this works
out. Remember, you can always check www.tashing.org for the latest of where
we are, even if the plug is pulled. I'm not sure that Sam & Cheryl will
reconsider, but I know they are surprised at the response.
