I have decided to tackle the cutlass bearing issue. Reading other's difficulties with this process, I was prepared for the worst. Armed with my sawzall and a 9" metal cutting blade I went at it. It took me only about an hour. It seems that the bearing must have been changed when a prev. owner repowered, as the bearing was made in the USA. I went down to Fisheries Supply here in Seattle and obatined a new bearing. It is 5" long, just like the one I removed. I put it in the freezer at the boatyard for a few hours while I ran some sandpaper in the log tube to clean up any burrs I might have made. When I went to put it in, it slid halfway in just by hand. So far so good. I got a board and then started tapping it with a hammer and was able to get all but 1/2" in. I then tried the threaded rod/washers trick to see if I could press it the reast of the way in but I got a bit chicken because I felt I was putting too much force on it so I stopped. Is it a bad thing to leave out 1/2" of the bearing? I will have the yar
d guys look at it monday. I am just worried that I might have messed things up. Any thoughts?
