Your concern about asbestos is well found as a single exposure has the
potential to kill you sometime during your life. Asbestos left undisturbed
is not a problem it's when one cuts into it making the fibers airborne that
creates a health hazard. This is my understanding based on what I have read
during my firefighting days in NYC. Before we knew better, (1970's) I
remember pulling apart asbestos pipe insulation during a fire outside a
heating plant without wearing a mask. After all the invasive renovations
aboard Gray Eagle, (Tashiba 40, hull 160, 1987) I have never come across any
asbestos. The hull insulation below the waterline is said to be "foam"
according to the TaShing manual I have. This does not mean we are off the
hook. Grinding fiberglass without wearing a mask is just about as
potentially lethal as the asbestos exposure. Now if you throw in some
exposure to bottom paint and breath some acetone we can say boat maintenance
is not exactly a health sport. Just read the label on the cans and you will
see what I mean. For sailors like me, it's important to get as much sailing
in as possible as I will never know when that single exposure to whatever
substance will cause my demise. In order not to add to the risks I have
already been subjected I always wear a respirator mask, gloves and the cheap
white exposure suit you see boat yard workers in. Shower off the grinding
dust as soon as possible and know that most exposures take many years before
they apparently get you. Sail often!
