Richard,
Our freezer has two cold plates, one on the refer side and one on
the hull side. Your single plate has to extract the heat through
everything in the box as well as the insulation on the hull side.
Then, the heat reenters through the hull side. This is what you
are experiencing.
As a quick fix, perhaps you can use the same idea that works so well
for protecting underwater metals by using zincs: Install Sacrificial
Steaks
on the outboard side of the freezer.
