Oh, no. I think that either the sheets were a bit too large to begin
with, or they "fatttened up" with wear over the years. We're not going
to go much smaller - probably just back to the size they should be.

Well yeah!! If we had 10 knots we'd be in Long Beach! (A bit of Newport
humor.)

Part of the problem might be the size and weight of the genny. I think
it's a little too heavy for it's size. The wind tends to fold it over
the shrouds rather than pull it through. As you say, timing helps a lot,
but luck is a factor too. If the bowlines catch on the windward shroud,
the sail will usually fill and pull it through. If it catches on the
leeward side, the sail will start to fill inside of the shroud and
that's a pain to get clear. Of course, if the sheet catches on the
windlass or one of the vents all bets are off. It eventually all works,
but it's ugly and graceless.

I blame the new mainsail for all this. Now we can point high enough to
tack!!
