I just returned from the boat and a meeting with a very good Yanmar mechanic. The diagnosis was a fractured Damper Plate with pieces flying about the bell housing. This is far less expensive than a failed transmission, except the labor is the same. It will be necessary to lift the engine into the main salon and separate the transmission from the engine. We agreed that I would do all the disconnecting of hoses, wires/cables and reattach them after the surgery. This should save a great deal of expense on the overall job.

$150 and they routinely fail between 10 and 15 years of age, according to the Service Tech at Mack Boring Inc. I plan to take some digital pictures when we get going with this.
