I'm a lurker - we own a Tayana 37 and have found some valuable info on the
Baba list. I'd like to add one more alternative - Google Groups. Email
and/or web based, no "in your face" advertising, free, self-maintained and
available 24/7/365.

Any list member can be given manager rights, so administration can be easily
distributed among several folks. Oh, and no spam so far, and I manage 5 or 6
groups on there.

And I like their corporate motto: "Don't be evil."

Ok, even though I'm bordering on going listless, I will make a final attempt
here to make a first attempt at a "forum desires and solutions" list. I
realize there may be a technical difference between "forum" and "list" but
I'm not making any distinction here; I'm just using "forum" because "list"
is easy to get confused with, for example, this list.

DESIRES. These are what I have gleaned from all the emails. Numbers do not
reflect any priority; they are merely so people can vote.

1. A forum to exchange information & ideas using a text-based email-type
distribution, along the lines of the old Baba-L.

2. A forum which is optionally web-based.

3. A forum which is free. Personally, I think this is a no-brainer, but hey
if you are willing to pay SailJazz, say so. Don't be intimidated by all us
"free-internet-information" nuts.

4. A forum which runs, at least in theory, 24/7, 365.242199 days a year
(baring hurricanes, floods, tsunamis, ice storms, whatever).

5. A forum which is DIY, run by one (or more) of us.

6. A forum which is not DIY, run by some independent entity that takes care
of all operational issues (spam, viruses, ISP's, broken machines, spilled
coffee, you name it).

7. A forum which does not make you feel "guilty" that another of us will be
doing unpaid work on all our behalf, which has the potential (witness
Baba-L) to be very frustrating and time-consuming at times.

8. The ability to exchange pictures, drawings, etc., ie, big files, as an
integral part of The Solution.

9. Ditto, but it could be a separate, independent solution (like the Tayana
Group has, I think).

10. A moderated forum (like Baba-L was).

11. An unmoderated/uncensored/self-regulating forum.

12. A forum that is ad/popup-free, or at least can be configured by you to
be so.

13. Other -- please state and make it known!

SOLUTIONS. Again, letters do not reflect any priority or indirect coersion
on my part.

A. Stay with SailJazz. Pay the $36.

B. Go with sailboatowners.com, basically a pre-subscription SailJazz
look-alike.

C. Go with Cindy's DIY solution.

D. Go with Yahoo Groups (web-based, text-based, or both). (The Valiant list
moved to Yahoo.)

E. Go with Rick B's DIY solution.

F. Go with MSN Groups (web-based, text-based, or both).

G. Go with Bruce's DIY solution.

H. Go with any non-SailJazz solution regardless of whether or not SailJazz
buckles and drops the subscription idea.

I. Go with any DIY solution. Leave the details up to Cindy, Bruce, Rick B,
or whowever.

J. Go with Yahoo Groups, MSN Groups, or any similar "Group".

K. Stick with SailJazz if they drop the subscription aspect. (see note
below)

L. Go ListLess.

M. Something else -- please state and make it known!

Note that I specifically have not tried to list the pros and cons of each
solution. I decided to stay out of that snake pit and assumed if you vote
you will be able to figure out the pros and cons yourself. Perhaps this is
a mistake. If people feel these need to be listed, then someone else will
have to take the job on of listing them.

Let's keep the voting simple by just using "H-high", "M-medium", or "L-low".
Just go down the list and assign H,M, or L to each one. eg, 1-L,
2-L...A-H,...H-M, etc. Yes, I'm offering to do the tally. However, as all
the replies will hopefully be made on the current forum, anybody else can do
the tally as well.

Feel free to add or clarify.

I think this should just "perc" for a few days, maybe even until this coming
weekend. As Bruce said, let's just "sit tight for a while".

[Note to K: This will probably require waiting it out until Nov. 8
(curious, election day...) and if SailJazz sticks with their plan we will
have to come up with an interim way of communicating after that. However, I
think Rick, Bruce, Cindy have amply demonstrated this is no big deal,
assuming we have the all-important list of email addresses. And Cindy's
email about the 164 addresses just came in so I guess this is covered.]
