Hi folks!

Sounds like the panic is dying down a bit and folks have found the fire
extinguishers and the life rafts. I'd like to clarify what I can and
can't offer from my server so everyone knows where I'm at.

I've got a Linux based web/mail server. I have a "professional" account
with my ISP so bandwidth or email count shouldn't be an issue. I have an
old-school listserv called Majordomo set up on it which can serve
email-based mailing lists. In conjunction with this, I have an archiving
software called Hypermail which reads mails passing through the
listserv, formats them, and adds them to an HTML archive. This archive
has a few threading options so you can view it by date, by thread, or by
author. This makes it easy for non-email people to read the list.
However, there is no way to post to the list from the web - you will
have to use email to post to a Majordomo list.

So now what I can't do: I can't spend time dealing with AOL or other
ISPs with overzealous spam filters but no way for their users to
whitelist. If AOL blacklists us, those users will have to find another
solution. I also don't have time to moderate the list. If someone (like
Rick E.) wants to step in a moderate, I can set that up. (In fact, Rick
and I actually tested this when he started having trouble with Comcast.)
I don't have a problem with an unmoderated list.

If this sounds useful, I can start setting it up. We can be up and
running before the shutout date. (I'm unclear from the SailJazz mails
whether this is the 1st or the 8th.)

Email addresses are coming in and I've received several from people
who've never posted to the list. This is especially important!!! If you
don't post to the list, we can't pull your address from the archive.
Likewise, if you receive list emails from a different address than you
post from, PLEASE let me know! This address list will be available for
whatever solution we (as a group) choose, so if even if you don't like
my listserv idea, please send your address.
