Cindy,

Do you have a database of all our email addresses? Someone should have this
as we are running out of time. I'm not technically capable of adding
anything constructive to the discussion of establishing a new list server,
however, I think Cindy, Rick Beddoe's, Steve Hodge and ? Should discuss the
merits of each technology and set up a temporary Baba home for the list and
send out a blanket email to reconstruct our ability to further plan and
discuss the situation. For now, any temporary solution is fine!

On my wish list I have a FREE Internet Baba list as number one. I would like
to see no pop-ups and no ads if possible. The private DIY list is more what
I have in mind and monitored to the extent of keeping out spam and
unregistered participants. I'm not sure how many cruisers want to receive
daily posts from a list. It takes a long time to download multiple email
files on winlink or Sailmail. Bill from Amadon Light can tell us if
receiving list mail while underway through SSB radio is important vs.
reading it from the Internet after arriving in port. I do not cruise full
time but during summer trips north I have my hands full getting all the
regular correspondence downloaded through winlink without adding posts from
a list. And lastly, a list that stays up 24/7.

I'm sure some of the above is not possible or others have more to add -
please do. Right now, we need to make a decision. It does not have to be the
perfect decision. Even if it the wrong decision it's better than going down,
November 8th, in flames.

So...all those computer techs, tell us where to go and we will follow.
Navigate through the pass and we will trim the sails.

We discussed this when Rick E. was having trouble with the old Baba-L
list. The concern was (and is) that there are people on the list who are
out cruising and who need a clean (non-html) email that can be received
over low bandwidth connections or over SailMail. Going to a website
would probably mean that these folks wouldn't be able to participate.

There's also the issue of ads sucking up the bandwidth.

This is a much better idea. It gets to the DIY spirit that has served us
so well in the past. Back in the earlier discussions I offered to set up
an archived listserv on our server here (ballreich.net). I have the
software (majordomo) on the system and can set up a moderated or
non-moderated mailing list very quickly. It sounds like Ken is in a
similar position. Rick Beddoe's offer of a web based forum is very good,
but I don't think it would allow an email based system. (Maybe it would.
Rick?)

Since SailJazz is forcing the issue on the 8th, I think we need to put
our frustration aside and make a quick move to a new list. There's a
squall line on the radar and we need to put in a reef and get ready.
Baba-L is not about a provider, but the people on this list. These
relationships and the information exchanged here are much too important
to let go.
